Is Northolt a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Northolt.

Northolt is safer than the rest of Ealing. It records fewer crimes per head than the borough as a whole, by a clear margin. The most common incidents are low-level nuisance, with serious harm a smaller share. Cars draw more attention from thieves than they do in most places. For a London borough, the figures are reassuring.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 6,278 crimes across Northolt in the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 98 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 18% below the average for the London Borough of Ealing.

The borough-wide rate for the same year was about 120 per 1,000 residents, so Northolt's 98 is the lower of the two numbers on the same scale. Buyers who write off the whole of west London are taking Ealing's average as a description of every town in it, when this one comes in well under that average.

The numbers come from a dense, busy place. Northolt averages about 9,500 residents per square kilometre, about 5% of working-age residents were unemployed at the 2021 census, and about 18% of households were overcrowded. That is a lot of people living close together, and the crime rate is lower than you might expect from that description.

The mix matters more than the total. Violence and sexual offences make up about 29% of Northolt's recorded crime against about 35% nationally, so the category that sounds worst is a smaller slice here than across England and Wales. That category also covers common assault without injury. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 23% against about 16% nationally, and vehicle crime about 9% against about 5%. Drugs offences are about 6% against about 4%, other theft about 6% against about 7%, and public order about 5% against about 7%. In Northolt, a buyer is more likely to have the car broken into or put up with noise than to be harmed. The police's own crime map shows the street around any address, and the after-dark incidents on it tell you more than this town-wide mix.

Recording a crime is one thing and solving it is another. The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases close with nobody identified. That is a force-wide figure covering the whole of London, and it says nothing about how likely a crime is in Northolt. It does mean that if your catalytic converter goes, the paperwork will probably outlast the investigation.

Northolt is among the safer corners of Ealing, which is not the same as having no crime at all, and for London that is a solid result.
