Newent is less safe than its market-town looks suggest, with crime running about a third above the rest of the Forest of Dean. That's the gap a buyer will notice. The total is still a few hundred crimes a year. Unemployment is low, and so is overcrowding. Newent's numbers are poor for this district, which is a different claim from calling the town rough.
Gloucestershire Constabulary recorded 362 crimes in Newent in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 57 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 34% above the Forest of Dean average. Neither figure says anything about which streets the incidents happened on.
The Forest of Dean district as a whole ran at about 43 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year, against Newent's 57. The district is mostly villages, farmland and woods, and a market town with a high street, pubs and a secondary school is always going to stand out against that background. Newent is high for the Forest of Dean, and that is not the same thing as high.
The town is more built-up than most of the district around it, with about 3,200 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment is about 2% and about 3% of households are overcrowded, both low. None of these explains the crime figure, and none of them points to a town under strain.
Violence and sexual offences made up about 47% of Newent's recorded crime over the year, against about 35% nationally. That category covers everything from serious assault down to common assault with no injury, and it is the largest one almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour was about 20% here against 16% nationally. Public order and criminal damage were each about 7%, level with the national shares. Other theft was about 6% against 7%, and shoplifting about 4% against 8%. With only 362 crimes in the year, a handful of incidents either way moves any of these shares by several points, so this year's mix may not hold next year. The low shoplifting share is the most solid finding here, and it fits a town whose shops close up early.
Gloucestershire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 39th of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 33% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures for the whole county, based on the eight months the force reported between June 2025 and May 2026. They show what happens after a crime is reported, not how likely one is in Newent. The police's public crime map plots incidents month by month to the nearest street point, and a few months of it around the house you are viewing will tell you more than the town-wide rate.
Newent is a weak spot for safety by the standards of its own district. The rate is well above the Forest of Dean average, though nothing in the record suggests the town is dangerous.
