Who lives in New Alresford?

For anyone buying or renting in New Alresford.

New Alresford is a town of settled, comfortable homeowners well into middle age. The typical resident is 52. Roughly seven in ten households own their home. The typical household income sits comfortably above the national middle. This is not a town people pass through, it is one they arrive in and dig into.

Ownership is the defining tenure here by a wide margin. About seven in ten households own the home they live in, either outright or on a mortgage, which runs well ahead of the national picture. Renting is very much the minority arrangement, with roughly one in seven households renting privately and a smaller slice again in social housing, adding up to about a quarter of homes rented in total. The practical effect is a population that stays put, because owners move far less often than renters, and it shows in how slowly houses change hands in the town.

The age profile skews mature. The median resident is 52, a good deal older than the country as a whole, and the classic early-career group, the twenty-five to forty-four bracket, makes up only around one in six people. That does not make it a retirement town outright, but it tips the balance firmly toward the established rather than the just-starting-out. Young single professionals are the exception here, not the rule, and the town does little to pretend otherwise.

On money, the town sits well to the comfortable side. The typical household brings in a little over £63,000 a year, which is above the national middle and exactly what you would expect from a place where most people own and the housing is not cheap. More than four in ten adults hold a degree, and the town falls within one of the least deprived tenths of the country on the official measure, so the well-off impression the numbers give is not the accident of a single figure.

Household make-up follows the same settled logic. Around a third of homes are single-person households, and a fair share of those, close to one in five homes overall, are older people living on their own. Couples with children account for roughly one in six households, while lone-parent families are comparatively few, under one in ten. The mix leans toward established couples and older singles rather than toward young families packing out the school run, though there are enough of the latter to keep the local schools busy.

So who lives in New Alresford. Comfortable, older, well-established homeowners who chose the town and then stayed, which puts it near the top of the scale for prosperity and stability. If the neighbours you want are settled, solvent and in no hurry to go anywhere, this is squarely your sort of town.
