Who lives in Mitcheldean?

For anyone buying or renting in Mitcheldean.

Mostly homeowners in their forties and fifties live in Mitcheldean, settled and comfortably off. About three in four households own their home. The typical resident is in their mid-forties. Families with children are outnumbered by people living alone. It's a grown-up town that has stopped moving house.

Every population figure here comes from the 2021 Census. About 75% of households own their home, either outright or with a mortgage. About 12% rent privately, and about 11% rent social housing. Social renting is almost as common as private renting, so private landlords play a small part in the town's housing.

The median age is 46. People aged 25 to 44 make up about 23% of residents. The young adults the town does have are kept busy at weekends: the football club runs a ladies team and a youth section alongside the two men's sides.

The Office for National Statistics models typical household income at about £49,500 before tax for the financial year to March 2023, averaged across the wider area the town sits in. That is enough to run the two or more cars that half the households here own, and given the bus timetable, they need them.

The town has 1,175 households. Lone parents head about 9% of them.

About 28% of households are one person living alone. That figure includes the 13% who are single pensioners living alone. Couples with dependent children are about 19% of households. More people live alone here than in a family of parents and children, and plenty of three-bedroom houses are home to fewer people than they were built for.

About 27% of adults hold a degree, and about 16% have no formal qualifications. Full-time students are about 1% of residents. The town has no college and no station, so almost anyone in full-time study leaves to do it.

Mitcheldean's people are middling on most measures. Most own their homes, earn steady incomes and are past the stage of moving often, and the town has not been pulled up or down much from that.
