What's the area around Meopham like?

For anyone buying or renting in Meopham.

The countryside around Meopham is close, open and mostly farmland, with a village strung along the road through the middle of it. Green space is a few minutes' walk from most homes. Gardens are big. Water is within a short walk too. The village has a few dozen shops and a run of pubs for a parish this size.

The average home in Meopham is about 240 metres from a public green space, and there are about six within a kilometre. For most people, getting a dog out of the house takes no planning.

The nearest water, whether a pond, stream or lake, is about 620 metres from the average home, and there are about three within a kilometre.

The National Cycle Network is about 4.1 kilometres away on average, and no postcode in Meopham is close to it. Cycling here means the country lanes and the main road, without a waymarked route to make it easier.

Rated premises in the area come to 36 shops, 11 pubs and 5 restaurants. Eleven pubs make Meopham a village where people drink out more than they dine out.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs records fine-particle pollution across Gravesham at about 7.7 micrograms per cubic metre for 2024.

Meopham's character comes from its three historic cores at Meopham Green, Hook Green and The Street, with Sole Street, Luddesdown, Harvel and Cobham in the surrounding countryside. The nearby heritage ranges from a Romano-British villa in Cobham Park to a Second World War heavy anti-aircraft gunsite east of Cobhambury Farm. People have built in these hills for nearly two thousand years, and some of them used the high ground to shoot at aircraft.

The figure that tells you most about home life here is garden space, at about 315,000 square metres of private garden for every 1,000 residents across Meopham's neighbourhoods. The fields around the village aren't counted in it. Most homes here have a real garden, and a lawnmower is a big part of a Meopham weekend.

The business rates list held by the Valuation Office Agency shows 114 rateable premises in the area. The largest groups are offices, at 26, and shops, at 19, followed by smaller numbers of industrial and workshop units. These are premises on the list, which isn't the same as businesses that are open and trading today.

The Food Standards Agency has rated 30 food premises in the area, and about 97% of them hold its top score of five. None are rated at the bottom of the scale. Whatever you think of the menu, the kitchens here are clean.

No designated protected landscape falls within the area. There's no area of outstanding natural beauty, no site of special scientific interest and no ancient woodland. What's here is ordinary working countryside, so ordinary rules apply, and nobody asks you to carry a leaflet on a walk.

Meopham's surroundings are one of its real strengths. Green space, water and a decent garden are a short walk or a back door away from almost every home, and you don't need to drive to get to any of it.
