Is Marcham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Marcham.

Marcham is a safe area, and safer than the district around it. Crime runs about a fifth below the Vale's average. Hardly anyone is out of work. Homes are rarely overcrowded. The weak spot is what happens after a crime is reported, and that's a problem for the whole police force, not the village.

Police records show 268 crimes across the wider Marcham area in the year to May 2026. The published rate for the same period is about 47 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 19% below the Vale of White Horse average. That rate covers the surrounding villages as well as Marcham, and it says nothing about any one road. The police publish a street-level crime map that can be checked by postcode, and a buyer can look up the exact postcode of the house they're viewing there.

Side by side, the numbers are about 47 crimes per 1,000 residents here and about 58 for the Vale of White Horse as a whole. The Vale itself is mostly market towns and villages, so coming in below its average is a meaningful result.

The area's neighbourhoods average about 2,300 people per square kilometre, which is fairly dense for a village because the figure only measures where people actually live. Unemployment is about 2%, and only about 2% of households are overcrowded. Those numbers describe the area's character. They don't explain its crime rate.

The mix of crimes needs care, because the totals are low enough that a few incidents can shift any share by several points. Violence and sexual offences make up about 43% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally. That's the largest category almost everywhere, and it covers a wide legal range, including common assault where nobody was hurt. Public order offences are about 10% here against 7% nationally, and criminal damage and arson about 9% against 7%. Anti-social behaviour is lower than average, at about 11% against 16%. Shoplifting, about 6% against 8%, and other theft, about 6% against 7%, are close to the national shares. A year with a few incidents more or fewer could rearrange that whole list.

Charging is decided across the force, so these figures describe Thames Valley Police as a whole, not Marcham. Over the same twelve months, the force charged a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, and about 37% of cases were closed with nobody identified. On charging, Thames Valley ranks 37th of 42 forces in England and Wales, the kind of league position that gets a football manager sacked. None of this changes how likely a crime is here. It only affects what happens after one is reported.

Safety is one of Marcham's strengths. Crime is low by the standards of an already calm district, and the main weakness belongs to the police force that covers the area.
