Is Maida Vale a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Maida Vale.

Yes. Maida Vale is one of the safest parts of central Westminster. Its crime rate is about a third of the borough's. Nuisance makes up more of it than violence does. If a crime is reported, the chance of anyone being charged is poor. Most people here are never affected, but those who are should not expect much from the police.

The Metropolitan Police recorded 7,901 crimes in Maida Vale between June 2025 and May 2026. The published rate for that year is about 134 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 70% below the Westminster average. For a district three miles from Charing Cross, that is a low figure.

Westminster as a whole recorded about 440 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same year. The borough figure includes the West End's shopping streets, theatres and nightlife, where a small resident population sits alongside huge numbers of visitors. Maida Vale is the residential part of Westminster, and its crime figure looks like it.

Maida Vale is very dense, with about 22,900 people per square kilometre, most of them in mansion blocks and purpose-built flats. Around 4% of residents are unemployed, and about 12% of households are overcrowded. That is a lot of people in a small area, and it shows up more in noise complaints than in crime.

Anti-social behaviour is the largest single category, at 25% of recorded incidents against 16% across England and Wales. Violence and sexual offences come next at 22%, against 35% nationally. That category covers everything from common assault without injury upwards and is the largest almost everywhere, so its smaller share here counts in the area's favour. Shoplifting is 10% of the local total, against 8% nationally, and other theft 8%, against 7%. Vehicle crime is 7% against 5%, and burglary 5% against 4%. Maida Vale has more neighbours complaining about each other than people hurting each other, and slightly more of its crime involves taking things.

The Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces in England and Wales. That is a figure for the whole of London, not for Maida Vale. In 53% of the Met's cases over the same year, the investigation closed with no suspect identified. The low crime rate tells you how likely you are to be a victim here, and the charge rate tells you what happens if you are. Police.uk maps crimes street by street, so check the streets on either side of any building you are seriously considering.

Safety is one of Maida Vale's strong points. You are unlikely to be a victim of crime here, though the police are unlikely to charge anyone if you are.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
