Is Luton a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Luton.

Luton is almost exactly as safe as Luton. The town's crime rate and the borough's are a whisker apart. The mix of offences looks very like England's. Vehicle crime is the one category running ahead of the national share. That makes it middling, and the town's reputation is harsher than its crime record.

Police.uk recorded about 24,000 crimes in Luton in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 98 per 1,000 residents. That is about level with the wider borough. Both figures are published rates, and both cover a large, busy town that also contains a mainline station, a motorway junction and an airport.

Across the Luton local authority as a whole, the published rate for the same year is about 99 crimes per 1,000 residents, against about 98 for the town. The borough is mostly the town, so the comparison is close to looking in a mirror. The more useful yardstick is England and Wales, which comes in the crime mix below.

The town is dense, with an average of about 9,050 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods. The 2021 Census put unemployment at about 4% and found about 12% of households overcrowded. These describe a crowded, working town, and they say nothing about which street a crime happens on.

Luton's crime mix is close to England's. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, make up about 35% of recorded crime here and about 35% nationally. Anti-social behaviour is about 15% here against 16%, and shoplifting about 9% against 8%. Criminal damage and arson and public order offences are each about 7%, level with the national shares. Vehicle crime is the one that stands out, at about 7% of the local total against 5% nationally, so a driveway or a garage is worth more here than the listing photos suggest. The police.uk street map shows the recorded incidents around any postcode you are considering, and it is worth looking at the actual road. Luton's average covers a town, and your street may be quieter or busier than it.

Bedfordshire Police, the force covering Luton, charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the year from June 2025 to May 2026. On that measure it ranks 36th of 42 forces. About 38% of its cases are closed with no suspect identified. These figures cover the whole force, from Luton to the smallest Bedfordshire village. They tell you what happens after a crime is reported, and they say nothing about how likely one is.

On safety Luton is average, about as safe as its own borough and close to the national pattern of offences. Buyers who check the street map and park off the road will find the place more ordinary than its reputation.

Check it for your address. These figures describe the wider area, not a single street. For recent crime near a particular address, use the map on police.uk.
