Who lives in Long Hanborough?

For anyone buying or renting in Long Hanborough.

Long Hanborough is mostly home-owning couples and families, many in their forties, comfortably off and well qualified. Seven in ten households own their home. Renters split almost evenly between private landlords and social housing. Over four in ten adults have a degree. Students are almost absent. Most residents chose the place deliberately and mean to stay.

At the 2021 census, about 71% of Long Hanborough's households owned their home, about 14% rented privately and about 13% rented from a council or housing association. With private and social renting so close in size, the rented sector has room for people on ordinary incomes as well as people in transition. For Sale boards are rare, and the people already here are the ones who notice when one goes up.

The median resident is 42. About 26% of residents are aged 25 to 44, the years of first mortgages, young children and career moves. The rest are spread above and below, which makes it a mixed-age village with the middle-aged in charge.

The Office for National Statistics estimates the median household income at about £73,000 before tax for the financial year to March 2023. It is a modelled figure averaged across a wider area that includes the village, and it describes incomes three years ago. Before tax and three years old, that still points to households who can afford the prices here and keep the cars running.

Households are a fairly even mix. About 10% are lone-parent households, which means one-parent families are part of the village's ordinary make-up.

On the census figures, about 23% of households are couples with children and another 23% are people living alone, about 11% of all households being pensioners on their own. The school run and the solitary pensioner make up almost the same share of the village. That shapes local life: it needs both a busy Saturday football pitch and a good Thursday lunch club.

About 43% of adults hold a degree, about 12% have no formal qualifications, and about 1% of residents are full-time students. Graduates and non-graduates live on the same streets and use the same pub. A student renting nearby is a rare sight.

The people are what Long Hanborough has going for it. They are settled, solvent and varied enough that a new household of almost any kind will find neighbours like them.
