Is Long Hanborough a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Long Hanborough.

Long Hanborough is safe, and a little safer than the rest of West Oxfordshire. Crime is close to the district rate and slightly below it. The numbers are small. Unemployment and overcrowding are both rare. Nothing in the record suggests a buyer has anything particular to worry about.

Police figures for the year to May 2026 put crime in Long Hanborough at about 50 per 1,000 residents, roughly 6% below the West Oxfordshire average. That rate comes from 175 recorded crimes over the year, using the published population base. For a village of commuters and home-workers, that is a modest twelve months.

West Oxfordshire's own rate for the same year was about 53 per 1,000. Long Hanborough is about 50. Three per thousand is a small gap, and it puts the village in line with the district, slightly on the safer side.

The neighbourhood helps explain the low numbers. The average density across the area's small statistical units is about 2,200 people per square kilometre, which is the density of village streets, not flats. At the 2021 census about 2% of residents were unemployed and about 2% of households were overcrowded. None of that causes or prevents crime by itself, but it describes a place with plenty of space and plenty of people in work.

The breakdown by type comes with a warning attached: 175 crimes is a small enough total that a few incidents can move any category's share by several points. Violence and sexual offences made up about 47% of the village's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category is very broad and includes common assault where nobody was injured, and it is the largest category almost everywhere. Public order offences made up about 9% against 7% nationally. Anti-social behaviour was about 9% against 16% nationally. Other theft (about 7%) and vehicle crime (about 5%) were almost exactly the national shares, and shoplifting was about 6% against 8%. With a total this small, one busy month could reverse any of those. To see where incidents happened, look at the street-level crime map for the exact road and the roads around it. That will tell you more than the shares do.

Reporting a crime leads to a charge less often in this force than in most. Thames Valley Police charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the year to May 2026, which puts it 37th of 42 forces. About 37% of its cases closed with no suspect identified. Those figures cover the whole force area, so they are not Long Hanborough's own, and they measure what happens after a crime, which is separate from how much crime there is. In practice, the village has little crime, and when something does happen, the chance of anyone being charged is lower than the national average.

Long Hanborough is safe enough that crime should not affect a buyer's decision. Its rate is close to the district average and slightly below it.
