Is Launceston, Cornwall a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Launceston, Cornwall.

Launceston is safe, in the least exciting sense of the word. The crime rate sits a shade above the Cornwall average, and nowhere near far enough above it to change how anyone lives. This is a small town on steep ground recording the kind of trouble small towns record. The number actually worth reading here is not the crime rate at all. It is what happens after someone reports something, and that turns out to be a force-wide story rather than a Launceston one.

The police.uk record for the area shows 1,064 crimes in the year to May 2026, with a published rate of about 76 crimes per 1,000 people over the same period. That rate is calculated against a statistical population base rather than the resident headcount, so dividing one of those figures by the other does not reproduce the other. Take both as published and leave the long division alone.

Cornwall as a whole sits at about 74 crimes per 1,000 people. Launceston comes in roughly 3% above that, which is a gap you can measure and cannot feel. Anyone wanting this town to be either a haven or a warning is going to have to source that opinion somewhere other than the numbers.

For texture, the area averages about 2,580 people per square kilometre across its neighbourhoods, unemployment runs at about 2%, and roughly 3% of households are overcrowded. None of that is offered as an explanation for the crime figure, because none of it is one. It is simply what the place looks like underneath: a working market town with high employment and enough elbow room, which is a description plenty of readers will find harder to square with the crime rate than they should.

The category breakdown is where a careless reader gets frightened. Violence and sexual offences account for about 51% of recorded crime here against about 35% nationally, and that heading is a wide statutory grouping that sweeps in common assault without injury alongside far graver things. It is the largest category almost everywhere in England and Wales, and quoting it bare is how a perfectly ordinary town gets a reputation it has not earned. Below that, anti-social behaviour is about 11% locally against 16% nationally, criminal damage and arson about 9% against 7%, other theft about 8% against 7%, and public order about 7% against a near-identical 7% nationally. Shoplifting runs at about 4% here against about 8% nationally.

Then there is the part that gets left off the tourist board. Devon and Cornwall Police charge a suspect in about 8% of cases, against about 12% nationally, and the force ranks 42nd out of 42 forces on that measure. Around 26% of cases close with nobody identified at all. Those are force-wide figures covering an area far larger than this town, and they are not a measure of how safe Launceston is: they answer a completely different question, which is what realistically happens after you pick up the phone. The honest version is that reporting something here is more likely to produce a crime number than an outcome, and that is a resourcing problem stretching across two counties rather than anything the town has done.

Safety in Launceston is middling in the truest sense: neither the selling point nor the drawback, just an ordinary town posting ordinary numbers. The thing to adjust your expectations about is not the risk of something happening, it is the odds of anyone being charged when it does.
