Is Kingston upon Thames a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Kingston upon Thames.

Not by the numbers, and the tills explain much of it. Recorded crime runs far above the rest of the borough. Shoplifting takes a much bigger slice than it does nationally. Violence takes a smaller one. Kingston is a town that people come to spend money in, and some of them forget to.

Police.uk publishes a rate of about 170 recorded crimes per 1,000 residents for Kingston in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, roughly 89% above the average for the Kingston upon Thames borough. That rate comes from about 6,400 recorded crimes over the same twelve months. The area takes in the town centre, the shopping streets and the riverside bars, so the count includes plenty that happened to people who went home somewhere else afterwards.

Across the borough as a whole, the published rate for the same year was about 90 per 1,000. Set Kingston's 170 beside it and the gap is plain. The suburbs that make up the rest of the borough are carrying a much lighter load, and the town at the middle of them is where the borough's crime comes to be recorded.

The setting is dense and mostly working. About 10,100 people live per square kilometre on average, unemployment is about 3%, and about 8% of households are overcrowded. None of that marks Kingston out as a struggling place; it reads as a crowded, employed, busy one. The town banned its own Shrovetide football in 1866 because the game was causing too much damage to the streets, so Kingston has some history of deciding a crowd had become a public order problem.

The mix is where the picture gets clearer. Violence and sexual offences, the broad statutory category that tops almost every list and includes common assault without injury, made up about 25% of Kingston's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales, so it is a smaller share here than nationally. Anti-social behaviour was about 19% against 16%. Shoplifting was about 17% against 8%, the clearest outlier in the list. Public order offences ran at about 7%, level with the national 7%, other theft at about 6% against 7%, and drugs at about 5% against 4%. A town with that many shops gets that many shoplifting reports, and the crime rate inherits them. For a specific street, the police.uk map shows recorded crimes month by month, which tells a buyer far more about a flat above Clarence Street than any town-wide rate.

What happens next is a separate question, and the answer comes from the whole force. The Metropolitan Police Service charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the year from June 2025 to May 2026, which places it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. That is the record of a force covering all of Greater London, and it says nothing about whether Kingston itself is safe or not; it says how often a report ends with someone in court.

Kingston is a poor bet on safety by the published measures, with a crime rate pushed high by a big retail centre in the middle of it. Buyers who want quiet nights are looking for the edges of the town, and the shoppers will still be in the middle when they get there.
