Is Kilburn, London a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Kilburn, London.

Kilburn is safer than the rest of its borough by a wide margin. Recorded crime runs about a third below the borough average. Serious violence makes up a smaller share of it than it does nationally. Most of what does get reported is nuisance and theft. Kilburn makes plenty of noise, and most of the crime here is small stuff.

On police.uk's figures for the year from June 2025 to May 2026, Kilburn recorded 14,155 crimes, a published rate of about 148 per 1,000 people. That is roughly 35% below the average for Camden, the local authority the area is measured against. Fourteen thousand sounds alarming until you remember how many people live here, and the published rate already adjusts for that.

Set side by side, the two rates are about 148 per 1,000 for Kilburn and about 226 per 1,000 across Camden as a whole. Camden takes in the West End fringe, Camden Town and King's Cross, so a neighbourhood well under its average is doing well. The borough number covers a lot of streets nobody in Kilburn will ever buy on, and the 148 is the one that applies here.

Kilburn is packed tight. It averages about 17,300 people per square kilometre, about 10% of households are overcrowded, and unemployment runs at about 5%. That describes how busy the streets and flats are, without explaining the crime figures. In a place this dense, a lot of people witness every incident.

The mix is where Kilburn differs from the country as a whole. Anti-social behaviour makes up about 26% of recorded crime here, against 16% across England and Wales, and theft from the person about 6% against 2%. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, come to about 19% here against 35% nationally. Shoplifting (9% here, 8% nationally), other theft (8% against 7%) and vehicle crime (7% against 5%) all run close to the national shares. The pilgrims who rested at Kilburn Priory on their way along Watling Street had to watch their purses too, and the High Road has been a place for passing trade ever since. A buyer looking at a flat directly on the High Road should expect more of the nuisance categories than a buyer two streets back, so the police.uk map for the exact street is worth a look.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and it gets a force-wide answer. The Metropolitan Police Service charged a suspect in about 10% of cases over the same year, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases closed with no suspect identified. Those are London-wide figures and say nothing about how safe Kilburn is. They do say that if your bike goes missing, it probably isn't coming back.

Kilburn is one of the safer parts of Camden, and safety is one of its real strengths. Most of what the High Road throws at residents is a nuisance.
