Is Istead Rise a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Istead Rise.

Istead Rise is a safe area, with crime running far below the rest of its borough. The rate is less than half Gravesham's. A full year brings fewer than 150 reports. Unemployment barely registers. Most of the crime in Gravesham's headline figure is recorded in other postcodes.

Police.uk recorded 147 crimes in Istead Rise in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. The published rate for the area is about 43 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 56% below the average for Gravesham as a whole.

Gravesham's own rate over the same year was about 98 per 1,000. Against that, the village's 43 is a different kind of number. Buyers who see Gravesham near the top of a crime table and cross the village off are reading the borough's result and missing the village line under it.

The surroundings are those of a low-pressure place. The average population density across the village's small statistical areas is about 2,200 people per square kilometre, unemployment is about 1% and about 2% of households are overcrowded. That describes a neighbourhood of owner-occupied houses with space around them, and the crime rate matches the description, though none of these figures explains the other.

By type, the largest category over the year was anti-social behaviour at about 31% of reports, against about 16% across England and Wales. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal grouping that includes common assault without injury, made up about 24%, below the national 35%. Vehicle crime was about 8% against 5% nationally, shoplifting about 9% against 8%, other theft about 8% against 7%, and criminal damage and arson about 6% against 7%. With only 147 crimes in the year, a handful of incidents moves any of these shares by several points, so the mix describes one year and says little about the place's character. On the vehicle figure, in a village where 57% of households run two or more cars, the cars are mostly what there is to take. For a specific street, the police.uk map shows reported crime around the road you are viewing month by month.

Kent Police, the force covering Istead Rise, charges a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 6th of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 36% of the force's cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures for the whole of Kent and describe what happens after a crime is reported, which is a separate question from how often crime happens in the village.

On safety, Istead Rise has very little to apologise for. The low crime rate is one of the soundest reasons to buy here at all.
