Is Hughenden Valley a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Hughenden Valley.

Hughenden Valley is a safe place to live, and crime comes nowhere near defining it. The rate runs well under half the county's. Recorded offences come to a few dozen in a year. Nearly everyone owns their home and almost nobody is out of work. The bigger worry here is what happens once a crime is reported.

Police figures put recorded crime in the neighbourhood areas covering the village at about 27 offences per 1,000 residents in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, about 58% below the local-authority average. That's 67 crimes over twelve months. With numbers that small, a single busy month moves the rate noticeably, so a full year is the fairest view to take.

Across Buckinghamshire as a whole, the rate in the same period was about 65 per 1,000. Put the two together, 27 here and 65 county-wide, and the valley ends up at the quiet end of a county that isn't especially rough to begin with.

The neighbourhood itself has about 720 people per square kilometre, unemployment of about 1% and overcrowding at about 1%. None of those figures explains the crime rate on its own. They describe a place of big plots, people in work and houses with room to spare. In the Chilterns, 720 people to the square kilometre means you'll see more hedge than neighbour.

The catch comes after a report. Thames Valley Police, the force covering the whole region, charges a suspect in about 9% of cases, against about 12% nationally, and ranks 37th of 42 forces on that measure. About 37% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures covering a much larger area, so they tell you nothing about how safe the valley is. They tell you that if something does go missing from the garage, getting it back is unlikely.

Safety is one of Hughenden Valley's real strengths: crime is low by any county measure and lower again by the valley's own. The reassurance comes from how little happens, and the local police clear-up rate adds nothing to it.
