What's the area around Hounslow like?

For anyone buying or renting in Hounslow.

Hounslow has more parks than its reputation suggests. There's green space a couple of minutes from most front doors. Two big country estates are on the edge of town. The heath next door has more history than most national parks. Rivers and cycle routes are further off. Most visitors only see the traffic, and that's a pity.

The average home here is about 170 metres from the nearest public green space, and there are about 26 green spaces within a kilometre. Hounslow Heath, where in 1784 surveyors measured the baseline for the Ordnance Survey's first accurate map of Great Britain, is one of them. The heath has been measured more carefully than most of the country, and then left largely as heath.

Water is further away. The average home is about 1.3 kilometres from the nearest river, lake or similar stretch of blue space, with about two within a kilometre. The River Crane and the Duke of Northumberland's River both run along the town's edges, so a waterside walk is possible, but you'll need to set out on purpose.

The National Cycle Network is about 5 kilometres from the average home, and 0% of postcodes count as close to it. There's no ancient woodland in the area. Cyclists will be riding on ordinary roads for a while before they reach a signed route.

Beyond the town, the estates are the big draw. Osterley Park, Syon Park and the conservation areas around them give the surrounding area its grand houses and wide lawns, and Hounslow itself has very few of either. The town centre does the shopping and the estates do the scenery, so you get both without either getting in the way of the other.

On the valuation list, the area has 1,185 rateable business premises. Among them are 536 shops, 247 offices, 27 restaurants and 17 pubs. These count rated premises, so a shop on the list may be empty. Even so, it's a town built for buying things. With 17 pubs to 536 shops, people come here to shop far more than to drink.

Of the 380 food businesses rated for hygiene, about 56% hold the top score of five and about 3% sit at the bottom of the scale. On those numbers, eating out here is a safe bet, though a few kitchens still let the side down.

Across the Hounslow council area, fine-particle air pollution averaged about 8.6 micrograms per cubic metre in 2024. That's a figure for the whole borough, Heathrow side included, and individual streets will vary around it.

For private outdoor space, Hounslow has about 37,000 square metres of garden for every 1,000 residents. Gardens cover about 33% of the area, which is a large share for a town this crowded. The interwar semis brought back gardens with them, and so did the houses around them.

None of the area is in an area of outstanding natural beauty or a site of special scientific interest, and there's no ancient woodland. That's normal for a London town. The green space here is parkland, heath and country estates, and none of it carries a national designation.

The surroundings are one of Hounslow's real strengths. With parks a short walk from almost every home, a historic heath and two country estates nearby, most of its neighbours would be glad to swap.
