Who lives in Honiton?

For anyone buying or renting in Honiton.

Honiton is a town of owners, and a striking number of them live on their own. The median resident is fifty. About two-thirds own their home. A third of households are one person. This is not a young town, and to its credit it has never once pretended to be.

Census 2021, the source for every population figure here, puts owner occupation at about 68% of households, with about 19% renting privately and about 13% in social housing. That ownership level is the mechanism behind everything else about the place: people buy here, then stay, and the market moves slowly because nobody is being forced out of it by a rent review.

The median age is 50, and about 20% of residents are aged 25 to 44. The band that usually generates the noise in a town, the promotion-chasing nursery-run years, is the thinnest slice of this one. Nothing about Honiton has ever suggested it wanted that noise.

Modelled household income for the area came to about £48,700 before tax in the financial year to March 2023, or roughly £37,900 once tax has taken its cut. That figure describes that year rather than this one, and it is a whole household rather than a salary, which is the detail people skip before comparing it to their own payslip and briefly feeling either rich or robbed.

About 34% of households are one person, and about 19% are a pensioner living alone, a group that sits inside that first figure rather than alongside it. Couples with children account for about 15%, lone parents about 8%. The overall shape is small households living in houses that were built for bigger ones, which is why so many spare bedrooms in this town have quietly become offices, and why the parcel delivery driver knows more residents by name than most residents do.

On qualifications, about 26% hold a degree-level qualification, about 20% hold none, and about 1% are full-time students. That is a genuinely mixed town rather than a graduate enclave or the reverse, and anyone trying to rank a population from those three numbers has misunderstood what the numbers are for.

Of the 12,394 people counted, 12,292 live in private households and 102 in communal establishments such as care homes, so the household shares above describe very nearly everyone here.

The people of Honiton are a middling result in the statistical sense and a perfectly good one in the living sense: older, settled, mostly owning, short on extremes in either direction, and unbothered by how that reads on a spreadsheet.
