The schools here are solid, and the town covers every age without anyone getting in a car. Two primaries and one secondary, with a sixth form attached. Roughly four in five graded settings across the county are rated good or better. The village schools around the edges are small and stubbornly still open. School choice in Honiton is not a competitive sport, which after a few years in a city is closer to a holiday than a compromise.
Ofsted has published an overall grade for 172 settings across Devon, the local authority Honiton sits in, and 138 of them are good or better. Three are outstanding, 31 require improvement, and 3 are inadequate. Those counts cover the whole county rather than this town, so read them as the climate rather than the forecast for one classroom. A further 135 settings carry no published grade at all, which means not yet inspected rather than quietly failing, and anyone folding those into a percentage is selling something.
Naming a school is not the same as getting into it. Admissions run on the county's own rules, and buying near a set of gates buys you geography, not a place. The families who read the admissions policy before they read the property listing are the ones who stay calm when the offers go out, and the ones who work it backwards from the estate agent's description of a catchment are the ones who learn that estate agents do not run the allocation.
In the town, Honiton Primary School and Littletown Primary Academy take the younger years, and Honiton Community College is the secondary, with a sixth form, so sixteen-year-olds do not immediately become a transport problem. Feniton Church of England Primary School serves the village that has its own railway station. Beyond those, a ring of village primaries covers the surrounding parishes, most of them Church of England, most of them small enough that the head teacher knows every name in the building. Department for Transport modelling from 2019 puts a primary about 15 minutes away on foot or 8 by car, and a secondary about 30 minutes walking or 10 driving, which is the sort of arithmetic that quietly decides how many cars a household needs.
Schooling is one of the better reasons to be here. The grading record across the county is strong, the town handles four to eighteen inside its own boundary, and nothing in the local register would make a sensible buyer widen the search.
