Is Hersham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Hersham.

Yes, safer than the borough it belongs to. Crime runs about a fifth below the Elmbridge rate. Hardly anyone is out of work. Very few homes are overcrowded. Most of the disturbance in Hersham is planned in advance and happens on the green.

Surrey Police recorded 689 crimes in Hersham in the year to May 2026, a published rate of about 50 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 21% below the Elmbridge average. The rate is calculated on a statistical population that differs from the village headcount, so the published figure is the one to use, and dividing one number by the other will give you a slightly wrong answer.

Across Elmbridge as a whole, the rate for the same year was about 63 per 1,000 residents. Hersham's 50 is clearly below that, and Elmbridge is the kind of borough where a buyer is more likely to worry about the golf club waiting list than about crime.

The village's character fits those numbers. Hersham has about 4,070 residents per square kilometre averaged across its neighbourhoods, which is suburban density with no high-rise crowding behind it. Unemployment is about 2% and only about 3% of households are overcrowded. That describes the village and does not explain its crime rate, but it makes a picture of a settled place with spare bedrooms and people in work.

The mix of offences mostly tracks the national pattern. Violence and sexual offences make up about 41% of Hersham's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category is the largest almost everywhere and covers a wide legal range, down to common assault where nobody was hurt. Public order offences are about 11% against 7% nationally, and drugs about 5% against 4%. Anti-social behaviour is about 13%, lower than the national 16%. Other theft and criminal damage are each about 7%, almost exactly the national share. On a base of 689 offences, a few incidents either way can move these shares by a point or two, so read the small gaps lightly. If one street worries you, the police.uk map shows what was reported near a specific postcode, month by month.

What happens after a report is a separate question, and it is answered across the whole force. Surrey Police charged a suspect in about 11% of cases in the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 30th of 42 forces. About 36% of its cases closed with no suspect identified. Those are county-wide figures from Guildford to the Thames, so they say nothing about Hersham itself, and they measure how cases end up, which is a separate question from whether crime happens. Surrey's mixed record on catching offenders has little effect on a village that gives it so few cases to start with.

Safety is one of Hersham's real strengths. Crime is below a borough average that is not high to begin with, and nothing in the mix stands out against the national pattern.
