Good, and for a village this size the school question is refreshingly short. There's one primary on the doorstep. Nine in ten graded Medway schools are good or better. Secondary means a daily trip out of the village. Most of the stress comes from the admissions form, not the classrooms.
The two mainstream state primaries in the area averaged 105 on the Key Stage 2 maths score. Halling Primary School is the village's own, and on the Department for Transport's 2019 modelled journey times the nearest primary is about a 13-minute walk, 11 minutes by public transport or eight by car. That's the walk parents picture when they buy here, and it survives contact with reality. Families at the Cuxton end have Cuxton Community Infant School and Cuxton Community Junior School a little further up the valley, and parents from Cuxton look back down the road at Halling Primary as an option too. The traffic between the two villages at 8.45am runs both ways.
Ofsted has graded 37 of 40 inspected settings across Medway good or better, which is more than nine in ten. Four are outstanding, one requires improvement and two are inadequate. Those counts cover the whole local authority, not only Halling, so they describe the pool a Medway family is fishing in rather than the village's own classrooms. Another 47 settings hold no published grade yet and aren't counted either way.
Secondary is where the village runs out. The nearest secondary is about 24 minutes away by public transport, 12 by car, or a 48-minute walk that no teenager will do twice. Leigh Academy Strood and Maritime Academy are among the secondaries in the surrounding area. At that age the school run is really a question of transport, and most Halling families answer it with the car.
Naming a school is not the same as getting a place at it. Medway allocates places under its own admissions rules, and living in Halling guarantees nothing at any particular school, including the one with the village's name on the gate. Check the council's current admissions criteria and last year's allocations before making an offer on a house. The estate agent's "close to good schools" line has never won an appeal.
Schools are one of Halling's real strengths: a walkable village primary, a Medway pool that is overwhelmingly good or better, and a secondary journey that is manageable if you have the car keys.
