Is Halfway Houses a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Halfway Houses.

Halfway Houses is safer than Swale as a whole, by a margin worth having and not one worth boasting about. Its crime rate sits a little under the borough's. The mix of crime looks much like the national one. Shoplifting runs slightly hot. Quiet streets, busy tills.

Police figures for the year from June 2025 to May 2026 put the crime rate at about 95 per 1,000 residents, roughly 9% below the Swale average. That covers 790 recorded crimes across the year. Both are published figures, built on the police's own statistical areas, so the rate is not something to recalculate from the population count on the village sign.

The comparison is Halfway Houses at about 95 per 1,000 against Swale at about 105. Ten fewer crimes per thousand people is a real gap. It is also the difference between a slightly quieter part of the borough and a different planet, and Halfway Houses is the former.

For texture, the area packs about 2,420 people into each square kilometre, around 3% of residents are unemployed and around 3% of households are overcrowded. That is a settled, mostly owner-occupied suburb rather than a crowded town centre. None of those figures explains the crime rate on its own; they describe the kind of place producing it.

Violence and sexual offences make up about 34% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally, so the headline category is ordinary rather than alarming. It is the largest category almost everywhere and covers a wide legal range, including common assault with no injury. Anti-social behaviour sits at about 17% against 16% nationally, level again. Shoplifting is the one that stands out at about 12% against 8%, followed by criminal damage and arson at about 9% against 7% and other theft at about 8% against 7%. Public order offences run lower than average, at about 5% against 7%. A place where the shoplifting share outruns the national one has a problem mostly for whoever runs the shops, and the people most likely to meet it are store managers rather than residents walking home.

What happens after a report is a force-wide question, not a local one. Kent Police charges a suspect in about 16% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 6th of 42 forces. About 36% of cases close with no suspect identified. That is the honest answer to "will they catch them": better odds than most of the country, and still not good odds. None of this measures how safe Halfway Houses is. It measures what Kent Police does once the crime has already happened.

Halfway Houses is one of the safer corners of Swale, with a crime rate below the borough's and a mix that would bore a tabloid editor.
