Hackney Central's schools are the part of the place that needs no defending. Every graded school across the borough is rated good or outstanding. Fourteen of them are outstanding. The nearest primary is about a five-minute walk from most front doors. Finding a good school is easy here, and the hard part is getting a place at the one you chose.
Across the London Borough of Hackney, Ofsted has graded 40 schools and all 40 came out good or better: 14 outstanding and 26 good, with none rated requires improvement and none inadequate. That is a clean sweep, and the count covers the whole borough, so it describes Hackney's schools as a set and says nothing about one classroom on one street. A further 24 settings have no published overall grade yet and are left out of the tally entirely. Lacking a grade only means the inspectors have not reached them, and it says nothing about quality. With nothing at the school gate to complain about, Hackney parents have had to take up the admissions criteria as a hobby.
Names on the map help with orientation, and that is about all they do. London Fields Primary School and Shacklewell Primary School share their names with two of the neighbourhoods this page covers, and Queensbridge Primary School and Mossbourne Parkside Academy are among the other primaries in reach. Places at all of them go out under the council's published admissions rules, which weigh things like siblings, faith criteria where they apply, and distance, so a home a few streets from the gate secures nothing on its own. For the secondary years, The Excelsior Academy and Waterside Academy are on the local list. For any school you have in mind, find out how far from the gate the last place offered in recent rounds went before the house goes on the shortlist. "Walking distance to the school" in a flat's particulars is a statement about the pavement and nothing more.
The walking times are short. The Department for Transport's modelled journey times put a typical home about five minutes on foot from the nearest primary and about seven and a half from the nearest secondary. Public transport takes about the same. Those figures date from 2019. The schools have not moved since, but some bus services may have, so the walking time is the figure to trust. In a place where most households have no car, a five-minute walk to a school decides more than any prospectus, and the school run can run on legs.
Families buying in Dalston, De Beauvoir Town or London Fields work to the same rules and draw from the same borough-wide pool. The one thing proximity reliably buys is a shorter walk to a school that is good either way.
Schools are one of Hackney Central's real strengths, a borough record without a single weak grade on it. Parents here have every chance of a good school and no say over which one.
