What's the area around Great Dunmow like?

For anyone buying or renting in Great Dunmow.

Great Dunmow is a market town with fields, a river and a lot of green space within easy reach of most front doors. A park is a short walk from most homes. Water is just past it. The gardens are big. The surrounding countryside has no famous protected landscape, but it is everywhere.

On average, a home in Great Dunmow is about 125 metres from the nearest public green space and has about 17 of them within a kilometre. That is enough for a different dog walk every day of a fortnight without repeating one.

Water is close as well. The nearest river, pond or lake is about 230 metres away on average, with about 35 bodies of water within a kilometre, from the Chelmer through its meadows to the Doctor's Pond. For a town about as far from the sea as Essex gets, there is a lot of water around.

The National Cycle Network is about 380 metres from the average home, and about 70% of postcodes count as close to it. Cycling into the countryside is easy from here, even though few residents cycle to work.

The rated-premises list counts 121 shops, 25 pubs and 16 restaurants in the area, along with 167 offices and six holiday lets. The town is next door to an airport and has six holiday lets, so most visitors fly over it and very few stop.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs puts fine-particle pollution across Uttlesford at about 7 micrograms per cubic metre for 2024, the district average including Great Dunmow.

Beyond the old centre, the countryside is small farms, moated sites and villages with conservation areas of their own, Stebbing, Great Easton and Little Dunmow among them, with Thaxted to the north and the historic park at Easton Lodge to the west. The hamlets between them are called Duck End, Bacon End and Pharisee Green, which sounds like a farmhouse breakfast and the person complaining about it.

Private gardens add plenty more. Across the town's neighbourhoods there are about 189,000 square metres of garden for every 1,000 residents, so most homes have outdoor space of their own as well as a park nearby.

The valuation list counts 454 rateable premises in the area, from offices and shops to workshops and warehouses. These are premises on the council's list, some of them empty, and the list does not show which businesses are trading.

Of the 55 food outlets with a hygiene rating, about 86% hold the top score and about 2% are at the bottom of the scale. A meal out in Great Dunmow is a safe bet on the hygiene ratings.

None of the area falls within an area of outstanding natural beauty, a site of special scientific interest or ancient woodland. The countryside is ordinary working farmland and river valley, and without a designation there are no crowds and fewer extra planning rules.

The surroundings are one of Great Dunmow's real strengths: parks, water, cycle routes and big gardens, all within a short walk of most homes.
