How well connected is Gorran Haven?

For anyone buying or renting in Gorran Haven.

Badly, and the village has built its whole routine around that fact. No railway station, and nobody commuting by train. Around half the working residents drive, and a third do the job without leaving the house at all. Not one bus is scheduled through the morning peak. Connectivity here is a broadband question, because the road question was settled a long time ago and not in the village's favour.

There is no station serving Gorran Haven, and the 2021 Census records a train commute share of zero, which is as clean a number as this dataset ever produces. Seven bus stops sit within the area, and about 1% of residents use a bus to get to work. Public transport exists here in the sense that a timetable exists.

The commute mix explains how people cope. About 52% drive to work and about 35% work from home, which between them account for nearly everyone. Around 7% walk and about 2% cycle. Roughly 46% of households run two or more cars, while about 11% have none, and that second group is the one to think hard about before committing, because the village makes very few allowances for it.

The nearest town centre sits about 26 minutes away by car. The same trip by public transport comes in at around two hours. That gap is the single most useful number on this page, and no amount of coastal scenery closes it.

Broadband is where the village unexpectedly does well. Superfast reaches every premises in the area, ultrafast covers about 15%, and gigabit availability sits at about 6%. Fast enough to work from, then, which is presumably why so many people do.

Mobile coverage is similar: about 100% of the area has fourth or fifth generation service from at least one operator, and about 95% has it from all of them.

For a commute, that means the practical options are a car or a laptop. Anything requiring a fixed arrival time somewhere else, at a time other people also want to arrive, is a driving job.

Rounding out the town centre picture from the same modelled statistics, which describe the area rather than a route from any particular door: about 55 minutes by bicycle and about two hours on foot. A two-hour walk to a town centre is not a transport option. It is a statement about where the village sits.

The Department for Transport's journey-time statistics fill in the rest, again modelled for the area rather than measured from a doorstep. A doctor's surgery is about 14 minutes by car, 28 by public transport and around an hour on foot. The nearest hospital is about 47 minutes by car and roughly two hours by public transport. A food store is about 19 minutes by car and about 96 minutes walking. Employment centres come out at about 59 minutes by car and about 39 by public transport, which is one of the few instances anywhere in this data of the bus beating the car, and worth reading as a quirk of the modelling rather than advice. Those public transport figures date from 2019 and services have been withdrawn since, so treat them more sceptically than the car and walking times.

The stops themselves tell the current story better. Across the seven, weekday scheduled departures average seven per stop, with none at all in the peak hour, though all seven get some weekend service. Seven departures spread across a whole day is a lifeline, not a network, and the zero at peak is what rules out a bus-based commute entirely.

One consolation: no postcodes in the area sit near or above 65 decibels of road noise, the level at which official mapping treats traffic as significant, and none reach it for rail either. The price of being difficult to reach is that nothing much comes past.

Connectivity is comfortably the weakest thing about Gorran Haven, and it is not close. The village works beautifully for anyone whose commute is a staircase and punishingly for anyone whose commute is a timetable.
