Who lives in Galleywood?

For anyone buying or renting in Galleywood.

Galleywood is mostly owner-occupiers in late middle age, who bought a family house and have no plans to move. Three in four own their homes. The typical resident is in their late forties. Pensioners living alone are nearly as common as couples raising children. Students are almost absent.

Every population figure here comes from the 2021 Census, which counted 6,735 people in 2,784 households. About 74% of households own their home, about 9% rent privately and about 17% rent from the council or a housing association. Social renters outnumber private ones, a legacy of the council estates built in the 1920s and again in the 1960s and 1970s. With so little private renting, there is barely a rental market here to speak of.

The median age is 47, and people aged 25 to 44 make up about 23% of residents. The young adults who grew up in Galleywood mostly seem to have gone to Chelmsford, where the flats and the nightlife are, and some of them come back once they have children.

Household income averaged about £67,600 before tax in the financial year to March 2023, a figure the Office for National Statistics models across the wider area, so it says little about any one household. For most families that is enough to keep a semi on the mortgage and pay for the extension on top.

About 31% of households are one person living alone, and pensioners living alone, who are part of that figure, make up about 17% of all households. Couples with dependent children account for about 18%, and lone parents for about 10%. On a typical Galleywood road, the house with the trampoline is about as common as the house where one person kept the garden going after everyone else left.

About 28% of residents hold a degree, about 19% have no formal qualifications and about 1% are full-time students. That is a broad mix, as you would expect where 1960s council estates and later private developments were built side by side.

The census counted 380 people living in communal establishments such as care homes or similar institutions, and 6,355 in private households. With students at about 1%, those 380 are very unlikely to be in student halls. Whatever kind of institution they live in, they are counted in the village's age and household figures, so the age profile for private homes may be a little younger than the median suggests.

Galleywood's population is middling and steady: settled homeowners, solid but unspectacular incomes, and more people at the later end of family life than at the start.
