What are the schools like in Galleywood?

For anyone buying or renting in Galleywood.

Galleywood's schools are a real strength, and the main question is how far your child will travel once primary is over. The village has its own infant school. Primary results around here come in above the expected standard. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. The nearest secondary is a drive, or a fair walk.

Around Galleywood there are 4 mainstream state primaries with published results, and their pupils averaged 105 in the end-of-primary maths test. Galleywood Infant School is the one that carries the village's name, and Beehive Lane Community Primary School shares its name with one of the two roads through the village. The Department for Transport's 2019 model puts the walk to the nearest primary at about 8 minutes, which is short enough that the school run is mostly a matter of finding your shoes.

Across Essex, Ofsted has graded 218 of 246 rated schools good or outstanding, so close to nine in ten pass that bar. Of those, 22 are outstanding. At the other end, 23 require improvement and 5 are inadequate. Another 238 settings across the county have no published grade yet, which says nothing either way about how good they are. The county figure covers everything from coastal towns to commuter villages, so it tells you the system around Galleywood is sound and nothing about any particular classroom.

Secondary is where the distances grow. The same 2019 model puts the nearest secondary about 26 minutes away on foot, 10 by car and 16 by public transport. The schools on the wider Chelmsford list include Great Baddow High School, Moulsham High School and King Edward VI Grammar School, and which one a child goes to depends on Essex's published admissions rules. Buying a house near a school's gates does not secure a place there. Essex publishes how each school allocated its places last year, and it is worth reading that for any school you are counting on while the house is still only a viewing. Children who could walk to primary in eight minutes find out at eleven that Galleywood is a village for the purposes of secondary school too.

On schools, Galleywood is one of its own best arguments: good primaries close by, a strong county system behind them, and a longer trip once children reach secondary age.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
