Forest Gate has far more open grass around it than a place this crowded would lead anyone to expect. The nearest green space is barely a couple of minutes' walk away. There are dozens more within a kilometre. Water is within a short walk too. Most homes have little room indoors, but outdoors there is plenty.
On average the nearest green space is about 160 metres from a Forest Gate home, and there are around 27 within a kilometre. Wanstead Flats, a large stretch of open grassland, runs along the district, and West Ham Park is among the green spaces nearby. Many dogs here have more open ground to run on than their owners have floor space at home.
The nearest water is about 770 metres away on average, and there are around six bodies of water within a kilometre.
Cyclists have further to go. The nearest stretch of the National Cycle Network is about 3.2 kilometres away on average, and no postcode is close to it, so most rides start on ordinary roads.
The rating list shows what the high street is made of: 685 shop premises, 18 restaurants and nine pubs. Forest Gate is a place to buy things, and with nine pubs a regular could know every one of them inside a fortnight.
Newham's average fine-particle pollution in 2024 was about 9.6 micrograms per cubic metre, a figure for the whole borough.
Many of the area's landmarks are open space or old institutions, not attractions. The City of London Cemetery is one of the large green spaces in the surrounding area, the one neighbour that will never put in a planning application. Clapton Community Football Club plays at the Old Spotted Dog Ground, London's oldest senior football ground, which it bought in 2020. The neighbouring districts are Stratford, Manor Park, Leytonstone and Upton Park, and most journeys out of Forest Gate pass through one of them.
Private gardens add about 21,600 square metres of outdoor space for every 1,000 residents. With about half the homes terraced, most of that is the strip behind each house, long enough for a table and a washing line and not much more.
The valuation list holds 1,435 rateable premises in the area, including 685 shops and 279 offices. These are premises on the list, which counts some empty units, so the shop figure is larger than the number of shops actually trading.
Of 315 food businesses with a hygiene rating, about 37% have the top score and about 19% are at the lower end. Read the hygiene sticker before the menu.
No protected landscape designation covers any part of Forest Gate: no area of outstanding natural beauty, no site of special scientific interest and no ancient woodland. Its open space is municipal, made up of a forest edge kept as public grassland, borough parks and a large cemetery, and that is what the people here use.
The surroundings are one of Forest Gate's real strengths, with open ground a short walk from almost every front door in a district where indoor space is the scarce thing.
