The schools around Finsbury Park are very good, and the inspection record backs that up. Almost every graded school in the borough is good or better. Close to half are outstanding. The nearest primary is a few minutes' walk from most front doors. The hard part is getting a place, not finding a decent school.
Haringey has 36 schools and settings with a published Ofsted grade, and 35 of them are rated good or better, so nearly all of them. Sixteen are outstanding, 19 are good, one requires improvement and none is inadequate. Another 37 settings across the borough have not yet been given a graded inspection, which means only that no grade is on record. The 35-of-36 record belongs to Haringey as a whole, and parts of Finsbury Park fall in Islington and Hackney, whose councils run their own schools and their own records. Parents on the Islington side of Stroud Green Road may find the borough on the brochure is not the borough on the admission letter.
Distance is not the problem. The Department for Transport modelled the walk to the nearest primary at about five minutes and to the nearest secondary at about twelve, in figures from 2019. Places are handed out under each council's published admissions rules, so a short walk to a school does not mean a seat in it, and in a borough where nearly everything is rated well, the popular schools fill up from the streets closest to the gate. The thing to check is which council's admissions rules cover the exact address, and how far from the gate last year's final offer reached.
A few names show the shape of the area. Stroud Green Primary School and Woodberry Down Community Primary School serve opposite edges of the neighbourhood, and South Harringay Infant School and South Harringay Junior School split the primary years between them for families on the Harringay side. For secondary, Skinners' Academy serves the Hackney edge near Manor House and the Arts and Media School Islington takes children from the south side. The rest is a long list of primaries within walking distance, more choice than most families can use. With this many good schools close by, the parents who fall out over admissions are usually arguing about which good school, which is a nice problem to have, though it doesn't feel like one in March.
The schools are among the best things about living in Finsbury Park. The inspection record is close to faultless, and the only real catch is the competition for places.
