Who lives in Feltham?

For anyone buying or renting in Feltham.

Feltham is mostly young working households, and only about half of them own their homes. The rest rent, split roughly evenly between private landlords and social housing. The typical resident is in their mid-thirties. Families with children are common, and so are single parents. It is a town of people at the start of things, and many of them will move on when they can afford to.

About 49% of households own their home. About 23% rent privately and about 26% rent from a council or housing association. Owners make up just under half, and social renting is slightly more common than private renting, which is unusual for a London suburb with a busy rental market.

The typical Feltham resident is 36, and about 31% of residents are aged 25 to 44. At 36, most of them are old enough to want a mortgage and many are still saving for one.

The Office for National Statistics models typical household income in Feltham at about £75,500 a year before tax, for the year to March 2023. After tax the same households have about £50,700, which is the amount that actually covers the rent or the mortgage. These are modelled averages across the area and are now a few years old. Neither figure describes any particular household.

The 2021 census describes Feltham's households in some detail. About 24% are couples with children and about 16% are lone-parent households. Feltham has a large share of households with children, and plenty of them are being raised by one adult. About 24% of households are one person living alone, and within that group about 9% of all households are a pensioner living alone. Feltham has its share of older residents, but they are spread thinly among the young families.

Qualifications vary widely. About 33% of adults hold a degree, while about 21% have no qualifications. Full-time students make up about 2% of residents, because Feltham has no university and nothing much to draw students. Graduates and people who left school with nothing share the same streets, and often the same buses.

About 85% of Feltham residents describe their health as good or very good. Across the London Borough of Hounslow, the rate of deaths from preventable causes is better than the England average, and smoking is similar to the national level. Those are borough-wide figures compared against England, not measurements of Feltham itself.

Feltham's community is the weakest part of its profile. With high levels of renting, many single-parent households and a fifth of adults without qualifications, it is a town where people are still working towards security.
