What are the schools like in Felsted?

For anyone buying or renting in Felsted.

Felsted's schools are good, and the county around them is better than most parents expect. The primaries around here score above the expected standard in maths. About nine in ten graded settings across Essex are good or better. The village primary is walkable, and the secondary is a drive. The most famous school in the village is the one most families will never use.

There are three state primaries in the area, and their pupils average about 104 on the end-of-primary maths tests, where 100 marks the expected standard. Felsted Primary School is the one carrying the village's name, about 18 minutes' walk or eight minutes by car on the Department for Transport's modelled figures from 2019. Stebbing Primary School and The Flitch Green Academy are the other names nearby, the second serving the houses built on the old sugar beet factory site in the valley. Three schools is a small enough base that one strong year group can move the average on its own.

Across Essex, Ofsted has graded 246 settings, and 218 of them are good or better, which is close to nine in ten. Twenty-two are outstanding, 23 require improvement and five are inadequate. A further 238 settings in the county hold no published grade yet, and they sit outside those counts entirely. A county average spread over that many schools tells a Felsted parent how Essex is doing, while the three primaries above tell them how Felsted is doing.

Essex County Council allocates places by its published admissions rules, so living within sight of Felsted Primary School buys proximity and nothing else, and families who move in mid-year can find the year group already full. The useful check is the council's record of how far away the last child offered a place at Helena Romanes School lived in recent years, because that distance is what decides it.

Helena Romanes School is the nearest state secondary, about 16 minutes by car, 36 by public transport, and roughly 97 minutes on foot on those same 2019 modelled times, with the bus figure the one most likely to have aged. Felsted turns into a car-dependent village the day a child leaves primary school. The school run stops being a walk and becomes a timetable negotiation with whoever owns the car.

Then there is Felsted School, the fee-paying boarding school founded in 1564, which the village has been living alongside for over four and a half centuries. Of Felsted's 1,233 residents, 273 live in communal establishments, most of them the school's boarders, so the place quite literally grows a few hundred residents every term. Oliver Cromwell sent his sons there, and the school has been dining out on that review ever since.

For state education, Felsted is one of the better places to bring up children in this part of Essex. The primary end is strong and close, and the only real cost is the car journey once secondary school begins.
