Is Enfield Town a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Enfield Town.

Enfield Town is reasonably safe, though it records a little more crime than the rest of its borough. Most of that extra crime comes from the shops. Violence makes up a smaller share of crime here than it does nationally. If a crime is reported, the chance of a charge is low. That is middling for safety, with the town centre accounting for much of the difference.

The Metropolitan Police recorded about 124 crimes per 1,000 residents in Enfield Town in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, roughly 10% above the Enfield average. That works out to 8,632 recorded crimes over those twelve months. Both are published figures for a busy town-centre district, and they include everything from shoplifting to vehicle crime.

The Enfield-wide rate over the same year was about 113 per 1,000, so the gap is about 11 crimes per 1,000 residents. That is a real difference, but a modest one.

Enfield Town is densely built, with about 8,360 people per square kilometre. Unemployment is about 4%, and about 10% of households are overcrowded. Those figures describe the kind of area this is. On their own, they do not explain the crime figures.

The mix is more useful than the total. Violence and sexual offences make up about 23% of recorded crime here, against about 35% nationally. That category covers a wide legal range, down to common assault without injury, and it is the biggest one almost everywhere, so a share well below the national figure is a good sign. Anti-social behaviour is about 20% against 16%, and vehicle crime about 8% against 5%. Other theft is about 7%, close to the national share, and public order offences are about 5% against 7%. Shoplifting is about 14% of recorded crime, against 8% nationally. Enfield Town has been a market town since a royal charter in 1303, and some visitors still seem to think the stock is on offer as free samples. For a specific house, the street-level crime map on the police.uk website is worth checking for the roads nearest the shopping streets, which is where the shoplifting and anti-social behaviour figures are most likely to come from.

Once a crime is reported, the Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 33rd of 42 forces. About 53% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are figures for the whole force, not for Enfield Town, and they answer a different question from the crime rate. They show how cases end, not how often crimes happen, and that answer is less reassuring.

Enfield Town is middling on safety. It sees somewhat more crime than the rest of Enfield, but a smaller share of it involves violence than the headline rate might suggest.
