What are the schools like in Elstree?

For anyone buying or renting in Elstree.

Elstree's schools are good, and the county around them has made good the normal state of things. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across the county are good or better. Forty are outstanding. Only a handful are struggling. The harder part is getting a place, because a good inspection grade is no help to a child who doesn't get a place at the school.

Hertfordshire's schools are about as reliable as English schools get. Of the 227 settings across the county with a published Ofsted grade, 203 are rated good or better, close to nine in every ten. Forty of those are outstanding, 21 require improvement and 3 are inadequate. Another 226 settings have no published grade yet and sit outside those counts entirely. All of these figures cover the whole of Hertfordshire, and a parent in Elstree is choosing from a few schools, not from 227. The county average makes the odds look good, but every family still ends up at one particular school.

The village's own primary is St Nicholas Elstree, the Church of England school and the one that carries the village name. Places there and everywhere else go by Hertfordshire County Council's published admissions rules, so a house near the gate does not secure a place, and church schools often set their own priorities within those rules. The policy for the year you apply is on the council's website and takes ten minutes to read, which is less time than a viewing. Across the wider area, Cowley Hill School, Meryfield Primary School and Woodlands Primary School take younger children. Being the closest house to a school helps a family less than most buyers think.

At secondary age the choice moves out of the village. Hertswood Academy and Elstree Screen Arts Academy are the nearby state secondaries, and a child who walked to primary will most likely get a bus or a lift for this stage. The independent sector is on the doorstep too, with Aldenham School and the Haberdashers' Boys' and Girls' Schools named among the area's schools. A short drive puts a family within reach of fee-paying schools that other areas have to travel for.

Schools are one of Elstree's real strengths, set in a county where good is the norm and outstanding is common enough to plan around. Winning the admissions round is the hard part, because the schools themselves are rarely the problem.
