Is Egham a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Egham.

Egham is about as safe as an ordinary English town, with crime running a little above the rest of its borough. The rate is around a tenth higher than Runnymede's. Violence makes up a smaller share than it does nationally. Shoplifting makes up a bigger one. Middling, in a borough that sets a low bar.

Surrey Police recorded 3,241 crimes in Egham in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 97 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 12% above the average for Runnymede as a whole. The count covers the whole boundary, Englefield Green and Egham Hythe included, and the university's term-time population lives inside it too.

Runnymede's own rate over the same year was about 87 per 1,000, so the gap is ten crimes or so per thousand residents. Being above average in Runnymede is a little like being the loud one in a library.

Egham is a fairly built-up place, at about 4,500 people per square kilometre on average across its neighbourhoods. Unemployment was about 3% and roughly 4% of households were overcrowded at the 2021 census. Those figures describe the kind of town it is, a dense one with plenty of work and not much cramming, and none of them on its own explains a crime number.

The mix runs close to the national pattern, with a tilt towards the shops. Violence and sexual offences, a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, made up about 31% of recorded crime here against about 35% across England and Wales. Anti-social behaviour was about 14%, against 16% nationally. Shoplifting was about 12% against 8%, public order offences about 9% against 7%, other theft about 8% against 7%, and drugs offences about 6% against 4%. The Ferrari dealership is presumably not where the shoplifting happens. Look up the specific street on the police's public crime map for the last few months, since the town-wide rate blends the high street with the residential roads.

What happens after a report is a force-wide matter. Surrey Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 30th of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 36% of its cases close with nobody identified. That describes the force's record across the county and has nothing to say about how likely a crime is on any Egham road.

Egham's safety is ordinary: a shade busier than its neighbours, close to the national pattern, and nothing that should decide a move on its own.
