What are the schools like in East Finchley?

For anyone buying or renting in East Finchley.

East Finchley's schools are the easy part of moving here. Nearly every graded school in the borough is rated good or better. A dozen are outstanding. None is rated inadequate. The hard part is paying for a house near one.

Ofsted has graded 59 schools across the London Borough of Barnet, and 57 of them are rated good or better, which leaves almost nothing below the line. Twelve are outstanding and 45 good. Two require improvement and none is inadequate. Another 66 settings across the borough have no published grade yet, either because they are new or because they have not been inspected. Those 66 say nothing about quality in either direction. Barnet sets the bar high enough that parents spend their energy arguing over which kind of good their child gets.

A strong borough record still doesn't get a child into any particular school. Barnet allocates places under its published admissions rules, and a house round the corner from the school gate helps only as far as those rules allow. Church and faith schools add criteria of their own. Ask the council how far from each school the last place offered went in recent years, and compare that with the walk from the front door you are thinking of buying. Particulars that say "close to excellent schools" are describing the walk, and the walk does not decide who gets a place.

At primary level, Holy Trinity CofE Primary School and Martin Primary School are both on the local map. The secondary options include Christ's College Finchley, Bishop Douglass School Finchley and The Archer Academy, which has the same name as the Art Deco statue at the Tube station. Department for Transport modelling from 2019 puts the nearest primary at about nine minutes' walk for the average home and the nearest secondary at about 12. Very few parents here will need to drive to a school. Every year, plenty do it anyway.

East Finchley's schools are one of its real strengths, backed by a borough that almost never gets a bad grade. The schools are not what makes this move difficult.
