East Finchley is a safe area, and calmer than the borough around it. Its crime rate is well below the Barnet average. Violence makes up a smaller share of crime than it does nationally. Cars and homes take more of the attention instead. The people here are safer than their property.
The Metropolitan Police recorded about 70 crimes per 1,000 residents in East Finchley in the year from June 2025 to May 2026. That rate is more than a quarter below the average for the London Borough of Barnet. Over the same twelve months, about 2,180 crimes were recorded. That rate is the published one, and it is calculated on the statistical areas' own population base, so dividing the count by a headcount will not give the same figure.
Barnet's own rate is about 97 crimes per 1,000 residents over that period, against East Finchley's 70. For a district on a Northern line stop and a busy high road, that is a modest number.
East Finchley is also crowded. There are about 8,360 residents per square kilometre on average. About 4% of residents are unemployed, and about 6% of households are overcrowded. Plenty of people are packed in close, and on these figures they do not cause much trouble.
The mix of crime is where East Finchley differs from the national pattern. Violence and sexual offences make up about 22% of recorded crime here, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category covers a wide statutory range, down to common assault with no injury, and here it is well below the usual share. Anti-social behaviour is about 22%, against 16% nationally. Vehicle crime makes up about 18%, more than three times the 5% national share, and burglary about 8% against 4%. Shoplifting, at about 7%, and other theft, at about 6%, are both close to the national shares of 8% and 7%. About a third of households here have no car, and the households that do have one account for a large share of the crime. A buyer looking at a house with only street parking should check the street on the Metropolitan Police's street-level crime map. It shows reported crimes, though not who reported them.
Reporting a crime is one thing and getting a result is another. Across the whole force, the Metropolitan Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally. Over the same twelve months, about 53% of its cases were closed with no suspect identified. On charge rate it ranks 33rd of 42 forces in England and Wales. Those are figures for the whole force across London, and they say nothing about how safe East Finchley is. For a stolen catalytic converter, the crime report is mostly paperwork for the insurer.
East Finchley is one of the safer parts of Barnet, and assaults are rarer here than the national pattern. A car parked on the street at night is the main thing at risk.
