Who lives in Downton, Wiltshire?

For anyone buying or renting in Downton, Wiltshire.

Settled people, mostly, and few of them at the beginning of anything. The median age is 49. Owning is the default here and renting is the exception. The largest single household type is one person on their own. Downton is a village where most of the moving has already been done.

About 73% of households own their home outright or on a mortgage. Roughly 15% rent privately and about 10% rent socially, so a quarter of the village rents in total. That is not a negligible share, but the balance tips hard one way, and it sets how long people tend to stay once they arrive.

The median age is 49, and the 25 to 44 band makes up about 21% of residents. That is the age group that fills nurseries, changes jobs and moves house twice in a decade, and in Downton it is a minority interest.

Household income was modelled at about £70,500 gross, before tax, for the financial year to March 2023, so it describes that year rather than this one. The net figure, after tax, comes out at about £47,900. Both are estimates for the area rather than a look at anyone's actual payslip.

Every population figure on this page comes from the 2021 census. About 29% of households are a single person, and about 17% are a pensioner living alone, that second group sitting inside the first rather than alongside it. Couples with children account for about 18% and lone-parent households about 9%. One-person households outnumbering families with children tells you what the daily rhythm here is built around, and it is not the school gate.

On qualifications, about 38% hold something at degree level and about 16% hold nothing formal at all, with full-time students at about 1%. The spread is wide rather than uniform. The student share is the most honest number in the set: nobody comes here to study.

Health reads well on the self-reported measure, with about 84% describing their health as good or very good and about 4% as bad or very bad. Stepping up a level, across Wiltshire as a whole, preventable mortality sits better than the England benchmark and smoking sits similar to it. Those two are local-authority figures measured against England rather than anything counted in this village, and neither is a verdict on the people living in it.

Taken together, this is a comfortable, older, largely settled population that comes out ahead of average on most of what gets counted. Anyone arriving in their thirties with small children will not be alone here, though they will notice fairly quickly how thin the ranks are.
