What are the schools like in Dawlish?

For anyone buying or renting in Dawlish.

The schools here are solid, and most of the choosing is done for you. One mainstream secondary serves the town. Two state primaries sit within an easy walk of the middle. Specialist provision sits alongside them, including a residential college. What Dawlish offers is not choice, it is competence with nowhere else to go, which for most families turns out to be the same thing.

At primary level there are two mainstream state primaries in the area, and the key stage two maths average score comes out at 101. That is a number nobody frames and nobody hides: it gets no headteacher promoted and no parent panicking. Gatehouse Primary Academy and Westcliff Primary Academy carry the town's intake between them, and modelled journeys from the Department for Transport in 2019 put a primary about 12 minutes away on foot, or about 8 by car. Walking distance is the practical point. Most of Dawlish is small enough that the school run is a coat decision rather than a logistics one.

Secondary is Dawlish College on Elm Grove Road, and it is the only mainstream state secondary in the area. The pupil-weighted Attainment 8 score across that provision is about 39. Modelled journeys put a secondary about 17 minutes' walk away, or about 9 minutes by car. There is no second option to agonise over, no league-table beauty contest, no strategic house move six streets sideways. Families here spend the energy that other towns burn on catchment strategy doing something else with their evenings.

The Ofsted picture is worth reading at the right scale, because the published counts cover the whole of Devon rather than Dawlish alone. Across the county, 138 of 172 graded settings are rated good or better, so roughly four in five. Three are outstanding, 31 require improvement and 3 are inadequate. A further 135 settings hold no published overall grade at all, which means not yet inspected rather than not up to scratch, and anyone quoting them as a failure rate is doing so because it suits them.

Naming a school is not the same as getting into it. A place within walking distance does not guarantee admission, because allocation runs through the local authority's process rather than through how close you happen to have bought, and that is worth confirming with the council before a school becomes part of the reason you are paying for a particular street.

Beyond the mainstream, Orchard Manor School and Oakwood Specialist College cover specialist and residential provision, and a small number of independent support services operate alongside them. That is unusual density for a town this size, and it means families with additional needs are not automatically looking at a long daily drive out of the district.

For a coastal town of this scale, the education offer punches well above what the population would suggest: good grades across the county, a walkable secondary, and specialist provision on the doorstep. Schooling is one of the genuinely strong things Dawlish has, and it is stronger for being uncomplicated.
