What are the schools like in Darenth?

For anyone buying or renting in Darenth.

Schools are one of Darenth's real strengths. The primary results around here are solid. The secondaries do better still. Across the county, about nine in ten graded schools are rated good or better. The catch is the walk, which gets twice as long the summer your child turns eleven.

The three state primaries in the area average a scaled score of about 104 in the end-of-primary maths tests. Bean Primary School and Fleetdown Primary Academy are two of the names within reach. None of the schools nearby carries Darenth's name, so a child here goes to school somewhere else from the start. The Department for Transport's 2019 modelling puts the nearest primary about 14 minutes' walk from the average home, or eight minutes by car.

The three state secondaries in the area average about 58 on Attainment 8, the measure of results across a pupil's best eight subjects at sixteen. The names on the list are Leigh Academy Wilmington and the two grammar schools, Wilmington Grammar School for Boys and Wilmington Grammar School for Girls. The same 2019 modelling puts the nearest secondary about 32 minutes on foot and 22 by public transport. Parents who chose Darenth for the gentle walk to primary find out in year seven how quickly a school run becomes a bus pass.

Kent County Council's area, where Ofsted has graded 245 schools and settings, has 221 rated good or outstanding, roughly nine in ten. Of those, 38 are outstanding, while 21 require improvement and three are inadequate. A large number of settings across Kent have no published grade yet and are left out of that count.

Kent County Council allocates places under its published admissions rules, and a grammar school sets its own admission arrangements, so living close to any of the schools above secures nothing on its own. Look up the last few years' allocation distances for the school you have in mind on the council's admissions pages. That figure is far more useful than how near the school looks on a map.

Darenth's schools are a reason to move here, with strong secondary results and a county where good is the norm. The work is in getting the place you want.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
