Yes, Crowborough is safe by its own district's standards. Crime runs about a fifth below the Wealden rate. Hardly anyone is out of work. Hardly any homes are overcrowded. It's the dull kind of safe, and the dull kind is the one you want.
Police records for June 2025 to May 2026 put Crowborough at about 43 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 22% below the Wealden average. That covers 1,147 recorded crimes over the year. Both figures are the published ones for the area's statistical neighbourhoods, and they're a fair measure of how often something happens. They don't say where on which street, and nothing here pretends otherwise.
Side by side, the gap is plain. Crowborough sits at about 43 crimes per 1,000 residents, and Wealden as a whole at about 55. Wealden isn't a district with a crime problem, so being clearly below its average means something. The town is the quieter end of an already quiet district.
The numbers come from a settled sort of town. It averages about 2,990 residents per square kilometre, which is small-town density rather than city blocks. Unemployment is about 2%, and only about 2% of households are overcrowded. That's a description of the neighbourhood, not an explanation of the crime figures. It tells you what the streets are like, not why the numbers are low.
The mix of crime follows the national pattern closely, with a couple of small tilts. Violence and sexual offences make up about 39% of recorded crime, against about 35% nationally. That category is the largest almost everywhere because it includes common assault without injury, so a big share here doesn't mean a violent town. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 19%, against 16% nationally. Criminal damage and arson make up about 10% against 7%, and public order about 9% against 7%. Other theft is level with the national share at about 7%. Shoplifting runs the other way, at about 4% against 8% nationally. That leaves a picture of late-night rowdiness and the occasional smashed bus shelter rather than anything organised, set within a total well below the district's.
What happens after a report is a separate question, and the answer is less comfortable. Sussex Police charges a suspect in about 10% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which places it 35th of 42 forces. That's a figure for the whole force, not for Crowborough, because charging decisions are made across Sussex, not street by street. About 48% of cases across the force close with no suspect identified. None of this changes how often crime happens in the town. It does mean that if your shed gets broken into, the crime reference number may be all you get.
Safety is one of Crowborough's real strengths. The crime that does happen is the ordinary small-town kind, and there's less of it than almost anywhere else in the district.
