Is Crediton a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Crediton.

Yes in the way people mean when they ask, and no in the way the published figures answer. Recorded crime here runs about a fifth higher than the wider Mid Devon rate. The town is far denser than the countryside it sits in, which is most of what that gap is measuring. Unemployment and overcrowding are both low. Crediton feels quiet and reads busy, and both of those things are true at once.

The published police.uk figures record 870 offences over the twelve months to May 2026, giving a rate of about 72 crimes per 1,000 people. That sits roughly 19% above the local authority average. Both numbers are published as they stand, and the rate is calculated against a statistical population base rather than the headcount of people who live in the town, so the two are not interchangeable and should not be reconciled on the back of an envelope.

The comparison is worth seeing in full rather than as a phrase. Mid Devon as a whole records about 60 crimes per 1,000 people. Crediton records about 72. That is the entire gap, and it is the difference between a district made mostly of fields and the town those fields drive into.

The texture underneath those numbers is not what most people expect from an above-average crime rate. Population density across the area averages about 2,800 people per square kilometre, which is town density rather than village density. Unemployment sits at about 2%, and roughly 2% of households are overcrowded. These describe the place rather than explain the crime figure, but they are worth knowing before anyone builds a theory out of the rate alone.

On what the offences actually are, the mix matters more than the total. Violence and sexual offences account for about 44% of recorded crime here against about 35% nationally. That category is a broad statutory grouping covering everything from serious assault to common assault without injury, and it is the largest single category almost everywhere in England and Wales, so the bare figure sounds worse than it reads. Shoplifting makes up about 14% against about 8% nationally, and criminal damage and arson about 10% against about 7%. Anti-social behaviour runs the other way, at about 9% here against about 16% nationally. Public order at about 6% and other theft at about 6% both sit within a point of the national shares, which is to say they are unremarkable.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how safe the streets are, and it is answered force-wide rather than street by street. Devon and Cornwall Police charged a suspect in about 8% of cases over the twelve months to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, which places the force 42nd of 42. About 26% of cases were closed with no suspect identified. None of that measures the risk of anything happening to you. It measures what follows if it does, and the honest reading is that a reported offence here is less likely to end in a charge than it would be in most of the country.

Safety is the weakest thing about Crediton, and the one dimension where the numbers refuse to flatter it. A town that looks and feels like a quiet market town is carrying a crime rate meaningfully above its own district, and anyone buying here should know that before they hear it from a neighbour rather than after.
