The schools are the one part of Clapton that comes without a catch. Every graded school in the borough is good or better. Fourteen are outstanding. None is rated below good. The harder part is getting a place, because a good school with no weak alternatives nearby gets plenty of applications.
Hackney has 40 schools with a published Ofsted grade, and all 40 are rated good or outstanding: 26 good and 14 outstanding, with no school requiring improvement and none inadequate. That is every one of them. Another 24 settings in the borough have no published grade yet, so they are not counted either way. A borough-wide record this clean means the usual parent tactic of fleeing the bad school a mile away has nowhere to run to, so the competition happens between good schools.
The schools are close, too. The Department for Transport's 2019 model puts the nearest primary school about a five-minute walk from the average home here, and the nearest secondary about twelve minutes. Being close does not guarantee a place. Hackney Council allocates places under its published admissions rules, and the house nearest the gate can still miss out in a year with lots of siblings applying. Check the council's admissions criteria for the school you want and how far away the last child admitted lived, because a five-minute walk to a school is no use if the admissions rules send your child elsewhere.
At secondary level, Mossbourne Community Academy and Clapton Girls' Academy are the two names closest to home. Clapton Girls' Academy is the school carrying the district's name, and it gives families with daughters a single-sex option without leaving E5. Mossbourne stands on the site of an older school, so the district has rebuilt its secondary provision on the same ground before.
Among the primaries, Millfields Community School had a visit from Tony Blair in 2005. Mandeville Primary School turned its former caretakers' house into a teaching kitchen and community garden, and won a Civic Trust Award for it in 2021. Rushmore, Southwold, Daubeney and St Scholastica's Catholic Primary School are also nearby, and families here talk about them as choices rather than fallbacks. Parents used to treating the school run as damage control will find there is no damage to control, just a few competitive admissions to get through.
Schools are one of Clapton's real strengths. The quality is not in doubt, but getting into the school you want is a competition.
