Is Chorleywood a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Chorleywood.

Chorleywood is a safe place, and its crime figures are reassuringly dull. Recorded crime runs well below the district average. The mix of offences looks almost exactly like the national one. Joblessness and overcrowding are both rare. The detectives seen most often in Chorleywood are the ones from Lewis and Jonathan Creek, and they bring their own crimes.

Police recorded 951 crimes in Chorleywood in the twelve months from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 49 per 1,000 residents. That rate is well below the average for the Three Rivers district, and it covers a full year, so one bad weekend cannot change the picture.

Here are the two numbers side by side. Chorleywood's rate is about 49 per 1,000, and across Three Rivers as a whole it is about 69 per 1,000. Rickmansworth, Croxley Green and the rest of the district account for the difference between those two figures.

The neighbourhood behind those numbers is suburban and comfortably off. There are about 2,270 people per square kilometre, unemployment is about 2% and about 2% of households are overcrowded. None of that explains crime on its own, but it describes an area of large houses, steady jobs and plenty of room.

What does get reported looks almost exactly like England and Wales as a whole. Violence and sexual offences make up about 36% of Chorleywood's crime against 35% nationally, and that category is a broad legal grouping that includes common assault where nobody is injured. Anti-social behaviour is about 16% here and 16% nationally. Shoplifting is 8% against 8%, criminal damage and arson 7% against 7%, and other theft 7% against 7%. The one category clearly above the national share is vehicle crime, at about 7% against 5%. For a village built around driveways and the M25, that is the one figure worth keeping in mind. The police crime map lets you look up the streets around any house you are considering, which is the quickest way to see whether a cluster of car crime is close to your gate.

Getting a crime solved is a separate question, and the answer is less cheerful. Hertfordshire Constabulary charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, and ranks 23rd of 42 forces in England and Wales. About 40% of its cases close with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures for the whole county. They tell you how likely an arrest is after a crime, and they say nothing about how often crime happens in Chorleywood.

Safety is one of Chorleywood's real strengths. Crime here is low, ordinary in its mix and well below the rest of Three Rivers, so the main thing to protect is the car on the drive.
