What are the schools like in Chipping Campden?

For anyone buying or renting in Chipping Campden.

The schools around Chipping Campden are good, and the county they belong to has an inspection record most parents would happily take. Nearly nine in ten graded schools across it are good or better. The town has one secondary school, and it carries the town's name. The primaries are village-sized and close to most front doors. Here the school run tends to be a short drive or a long walk, and the school at the end of it is usually one parents are glad to reach.

Ofsted has graded 156 schools across Gloucestershire, and 136 of them are good or outstanding, close to nine in every ten. Nine hold an outstanding grade, 19 are rated requires improvement and one is inadequate. Another 95 settings in the county have no published grade yet, which tells a parent nothing either way about them. Those are county-wide counts, so they describe the education authority's record across the whole of Gloucestershire. On their own they don't say how any single school near the High Street performs.

Chipping Campden School is the secondary, and the name does a lot of advertising for a town this size. Among the primaries are St James and Ebrington Church of England Primary School, St Catharine's Catholic Primary School and Mickleton Primary School, which serves the village at the northern end of the area. Places at all of them go by the admissions rules that Gloucestershire County Council and the schools publish, so a house near the gate improves your odds without securing a place. Faith schools set their own criteria, so read the specific policy for the school you want, line by line, ahead of exchanging contracts. On the Department for Transport's modelled times from 2019, the nearest primary is about 18 minutes' walk from the typical home, or about 8 minutes by car. Secondary is about 13 minutes by car and about 55 minutes on foot. A teenager here learns the bus timetable fast, or gets very good at asking for lifts.

Small schools mean small year groups, so a primary's results can swing from one year to the next on a handful of children. One unusually bright cohort says more about that classroom than about the school. The best evidence is the school's own most recent Ofsted report, read in full, along with the date it was written.

Schooling is among the area's real strengths. The county's inspection record is strong, and the local schools are within easy reach of most homes in the town and the villages around it.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
