Is Chipping Campden a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Chipping Campden.

Chipping Campden is a safe place to live, with recorded crime a little below the rest of its district. The rate is lower than the Cotswold average. The volume is small. Unemployment barely registers. Sir Percy Hobart ran the town's Home Guard during the Second World War, and the threat level has been easing ever since.

Police.uk recorded 417 crimes across the Chipping Campden area in the year to May 2026, giving a published rate of about 37 per 1,000 residents. That rate is roughly 9% below the average for Cotswold district. The rate comes from police.uk's own population base for its statistical areas, so it does not line up neatly with a headcount of the town and its villages.

For comparison, Cotswold district as a whole runs at about 40 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same period, against about 37 here. The gap is real but small. This is a slightly safer corner of a district that is not dangerous to begin with.

The area averages about 520 people per square kilometre. Unemployment is about 2% and overcrowding about 1%. That describes a spread-out place where most people have work and room to live, so there are few crowds and the anonymity that busier towns have is missing.

The mix of offences needs reading with care, because a total this small means a handful of incidents can move any share by several points. Violence and sexual offences make up about 37% of crime here, against about 35% nationally, so the two are close. That category is broad and includes common assault where nobody was hurt. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 24%, against 16% nationally, and burglary for about 8% against 4%. Criminal damage and arson (about 8% against 7%) and other theft (about 7% against 7%) are close to the national shares, and public order offences are lower at about 5% against 7%. Those are one year's proportions from a small count, and next year's could look different. To see where incidents actually fall, look at the police.uk crime map around the specific house across several months.

Gloucestershire Constabulary, which polices the whole county, charged a suspect in about 9% of cases in the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally. That puts it 39th of 42 forces, and in about 33% of cases nobody was identified at all. The charge rate is a county figure and measures what happens after a crime. Low crime and a low charge rate are separate facts, and only one of them is about Chipping Campden.

Safety is one of the area's strengths. Crime is low by any reasonable measure and a notch below an already calm district, though the force covering it rarely charges anyone.
