Is Chiddingfold a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Chiddingfold.

Yes. Chiddingfold is about as safe as English villages get. Crime runs well below the Waverley average. A typical year brings a small number of incidents. Nobody here is out of work or crammed into overcrowded housing. What little crime there is tends to go after property, not people.

In the year to May 2026, Chiddingfold's published crime rate was about 28 crimes per 1,000 residents, roughly 39% below the Waverley average. That covers 113 recorded crimes over the year. Crime this low barely registers on the police.uk map, and the few incidents in a year can make one month look worse than it is.

Across Waverley as a whole, the published rate for the same year was about 46 per 1,000. So the comparison is 28 against 46. Waverley isn't a rough borough to begin with, and Chiddingfold sits well below it.

The village isn't dense, and it has almost none of the pressures people tend to link with crime. Population density averages about 1,150 people per square kilometre across its statistical areas. Unemployment is about 2%, and about 2% of households are overcrowded. Those are descriptions of what the place is like, not an explanation for the crime figures. They do show a settled, comfortable village where nobody is short of space.

The mix needs care, because with only 113 crimes a year, a handful of incidents can move a category's share by several points. With that caveat, violence and sexual offences made up about 37% of the total, close to the 35% national share. That's a broad legal category that includes common assault without injury, and it's the biggest category almost everywhere. Anti-social behaviour was about 18%, against 16% nationally. The categories that stand out are property crimes: other theft at about 12% against 7% nationally, burglary at about 8% against 4%, and vehicle crime at about 7% against 5%. Public order was about 6%, slightly below the 7% national share. Large houses on quiet lanes are an obvious target for burglars and thieves. It's a pattern worth locking up against, not proof of a crime wave.

What happens after a crime is reported is a different question from how often crime happens. Surrey Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, which ranks it 30th out of 42 forces. About 36% of its cases are closed with no suspect identified. Those are force-wide figures covering the whole county, not Chiddingfold's own. The best practical advice is the unglamorous kind: a decent lock, a lit drive and a car that doesn't have the keys hanging by the front door.

Safety is one of Chiddingfold's real strengths. Crime here is well below an already quiet borough, and most of what does happen is theft from property.
