Is Chelmsford a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Chelmsford.

Chelmsford is less safe than the countryside it governs, and the gap is wide enough to matter. Recorded crime runs about a sixth above the rest of the district. Violence takes a bigger share of it than it does nationally. Antisocial behaviour takes a smaller one. Chelmsford has fewer nuisance complaints and more serious offences.

Recorded crime in the city came to 12,058 offences in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, and the published rate is about 97 crimes per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 16% above the average for the Chelmsford council area. Essex Police has its headquarters in the city, so the offences are at least counted close to home.

The council-area average for the same period is about 84 per 1,000, set against the city's 97. That average includes villages such as Writtle, Boreham and Galleywood, so the city is being measured against its own countryside. The national police crime map shows recorded crime street by street, month by month. Look at the streets around any house you're considering, including the ones you'd walk home along.

At the 2021 census the city had about 5,650 people per square kilometre on average, 2% of residents were unemployed and 3% of households were overcrowded. That describes a busy, mostly working city with room to live in. It doesn't single out any part of it.

Violence and sexual offences make up 43% of recorded crime in Chelmsford, compared with 35% across England and Wales. That is the largest category almost everywhere, and it is a broad legal grouping that includes common assault where nobody was injured. Shoplifting is 11% against 8% nationally. Public order offences are 7%, level with the national share, and other theft and criminal damage are each 6%, a little under the national 7%. Antisocial behaviour is 9% against 16% nationally. The noisy neighbour, the most common complaint in many places, turns up less often in Chelmsford's record than in the national one.

Essex Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases across its whole force area, against about 12% nationally, which puts it 28th of 42 forces in the year to May 2026. About 37% of its cases are closed without a suspect being identified. Those are force-wide figures for what happens after a crime is reported. They don't show how much crime happens in Chelmsford. Having the headquarters on the doorstep doesn't improve the odds of a charge.

On safety Chelmsford is below average. The city records more crime than the district around it, with a heavier share of violence, and buyers who put a low crime figure first will find the surrounding district does better on the same measure.
