Charfield is mostly owner-occupying families in their forties, earning well and staying put. Eight in ten own their home. The typical resident is in early middle age. A quarter of households are couples raising children. Anyone hoping for nightlife and a student crowd will be disappointed.
All figures here come from the 2021 census unless another source is named. About 79% of Charfield households own their home, and about 10% rent privately. Another 9% or so are social tenants. For a village of about 3,300 people in around 1,300 households, that makes renters a small minority who rarely get a listing to choose from.
The typical resident is 43, and about 23% of people are aged 25 to 44. That puts the centre of gravity in mid-career: old enough to have bought, young enough to still be paying for it.
The Office for National Statistics models average household income across the wider neighbourhood at about £65,000 a year before tax, for the financial year to March 2023. That is a modelled area average, now a few years old, and before tax it always looks healthier than it does by the time it reaches the household account.
About 26% of households are couples with children and about 8% are lone parents. Family households carry the place, which explains why three- and four-bedroom houses are the village's usual stock.
About 21% of households are one person living alone, and within that group about 9% of all households are a pensioner living alone. Most of Charfield lives in pairs or more, though a good number of four-bedroom houses here will one day be home to one person and a lot of spare rooms.
About 38% of adults hold a degree-level qualification, about 11% have no formal qualifications, and about 3% of residents are full-time students. The mix runs from graduates to people who left school at sixteen, with very few students, because the students leave to study and the ones who come back return with children.
About 88% of residents describe their health as good or very good. For South Gloucestershire as a whole, the rate of deaths from preventable causes is better than the England average, and so is the smoking rate. Charfield's own figure points the same way as its council area's.
Charfield's population is settled, comfortable, family-heavy and healthy, which is a good reason to live here unless you need neighbours your own age who are still renting.
