Is Chacewater a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Chacewater.

Yes, and the numbers are not close. Recorded crime here sits well under the county average. The whole year's tally runs to about a hundred offences across the village and its surroundings. That is a volume small enough that a single busy weekend would show up in the annual figures. Safety is the least complicated thing about living here.

The published neighbourhood rate for the year to May 2026 is about 57 recorded crimes per 1,000 residents, from 106 offences over those twelve months. That rate sits roughly 23% below the Cornwall average. Both of those are published figures calculated on their own statistical population bases, so nobody should be reaching for a calculator to reconcile the count against the number of people who live here.

The comparison is worth seeing in full rather than as a direction of travel. Cornwall as a whole records about 74 crimes per 1,000 residents over the same period. Chacewater records about 57. The gap is real, and it is the kind of gap that shows up in insurance quotes rather than in anything anyone notices day to day.

The neighbourhood texture behind those figures is what you would expect of a small Cornish village. Population density averages around 770 people per square kilometre across the area, unemployment runs at about 1%, and roughly 1% of households are overcrowded. None of that causes anything on its own, and correlation is doing no work here. It is simply a description of a settled, low-density place where not much happens by design.

The mix of what does get recorded needs handling with care, because 106 offences spread across 11 categories means a handful of incidents moves any share by several points. On that basis, violence and sexual offences account for about 54% of the total against about 35% nationally, a broad statutory grouping that includes common assault without injury and is the largest category almost everywhere. Other theft sits at about 13% against about 7% nationally, criminal damage and arson at about 9% against about 7%, and public order at about 7% against about 7%, which is as close to identical as these things get. Anti-social behaviour runs at about 7% here against about 16% nationally. Treat all of that as a snapshot of one small year rather than a settled characteristic of the village.

What happens after a report is a separate question from how safe the area is, and it is answered force-wide rather than street by street. Devon and Cornwall Police charged a suspect in about 8% of cases over the year to May 2026, against about 12% nationally, which places the force 42nd of 42 forces on that measure. About 26% of cases were closed with no suspect identified. None of that changes the odds of something happening to you here, and all of it changes what to expect if it does.

Safety is the strongest card Chacewater holds: a rate comfortably below the county's, an annual total you could read in a single sitting, and no part of the picture that needs explaining away. The caveat sits with the force rather than the village, because a low chance of something happening is not the same as a good chance of anyone being charged for it.
