What are the schools like in Byfleet?

For anyone buying or renting in Byfleet.

Byfleet's schools are the strongest thing about it. More than nine in ten graded schools in the county are good or better. Thirty are outstanding. A primary school is about a quarter of an hour's walk from the typical home. Parents here argue about which good school to choose, and most areas would happily swap problems.

Ofsted has graded 159 schools and other settings across Surrey, and 147 of them are good or outstanding, which is more than nine in ten. Thirty hold an outstanding grade, seven require improvement and five are inadequate. Another 194 settings in the county have no published grade yet, so they say nothing either way about quality. These are county-wide counts covering the whole of Surrey, so the twelve schools that fall short could be anywhere from the Hampshire border to the edge of London. The odds are good, and Byfleet still has to check which school is actually on its doorstep.

Byfleet Primary School and St Mary's CofE Controlled Primary School, Byfleet, are the two primaries carrying the village's name. St Mary's has deep roots, and a Wesleyan chapel went up opposite it on the corner of High Road and Rectory Lane in 1928. Places at both are allocated by the council's published admissions rules, and living near a school does not secure a place at it. Admissions criteria can move from year to year as the number of applicants changes. Nearby there are West Byfleet Infant School, West Byfleet Junior School and New Haw Community Junior School, so the primary choice usually comes down to two or three schools, and that choice fills more evenings than most families expect.

At secondary level, Fullbrook School and Heathside School are among the options in the surrounding area, along with Brooklands College for students past sixteen. The Department for Transport's modelled times, which date from 2019, put the typical home about 16 minutes' walk or 14 minutes by public transport from a primary school. For a secondary the figures are about 35 minutes on foot, 24 minutes by public transport and 12 minutes by car. In practice, a lot of Byfleet's school run ends at a passenger door. Walk the morning route to any secondary you are counting on, at the hour your child would actually leave the house, because modelled journey times from 2019 do not account for queues at the lights.

Byfleet has a fee-paying tier close by as well, including Notre Dame School, St George's College Weybridge and ACS Cobham International School. Plenty of families who budgeted for school fees end up quietly relieved to find the state schools down the road were the reason they moved after all.

Schools are Byfleet's real strength. The county's record is about as good as English schools get, and the only hard part is getting a place at the one you picked.

Check it for your address. Admission rules and inspection results change from year to year, so before counting on a place, read the latest reports on Ofsted and your council's admissions rules.
