Is Byfleet a safe area?

For anyone buying or renting in Byfleet.

Byfleet is safe, and about as unremarkable on crime as a buyer could want. Its crime rate runs a whisker under its borough's. Violence makes up the same share of crime here as anywhere else. Shoplifting is lower than the national share. The most exciting thing in its records is how ordinary they are.

Surrey Police recorded 1,167 crimes in Byfleet in the year from June 2025 to May 2026, a published rate of about 61 per 1,000 residents. That is roughly 3% below the average for Elmbridge. A gap that size is close enough to call level, and Byfleet's record ends up in the middle of the borough's.

Elmbridge's own rate over the same year was about 63 crimes per 1,000 residents, against Byfleet's 61. Two numbers that close tell a buyer that Byfleet behaves like the borough around it, for better and for worse.

Byfleet is a built-up village, with about 3,190 people per square kilometre on average across its statistical areas. Unemployment is about 2% and about 2% of households are overcrowded. Neither figure is the kind that usually appears in a worried paragraph. Between the Byfleet Village conservation area, St Mary's Church and the Wey Navigation towpath, little of the village's best-known scenery generates police paperwork.

Violence and sexual offences make up about 34% of Byfleet's recorded crime, against about 35% across England and Wales. That category is the largest almost everywhere and covers everything up to common assault with no injury, so Byfleet's share is ordinary. Anti-social behaviour accounts for about 18% here against 16% nationally, and public order offences about 9% against 7%. Other theft is about 9% against 7%, and criminal damage and arson about 8% against 7%. Shoplifting is the one category that runs clearly below the national figure, at about 6% against 8%. Most of the mix sits within a point or two of the national shares, and the slight lean towards nuisance and noise is what a village with a busy high road tends to produce. The police force's online crime map shows street-level detail month by month, so look up the road you are considering and scroll back a year.

Charging is decided across the whole of Surrey and tells a buyer nothing about Byfleet's own streets. Surrey Police charges a suspect in about 11% of cases, against about 12% nationally, over the year from June 2025 to May 2026. About 36% of its cases close with no suspect identified. That measures what happens after a crime, which is a different question from how often one happens, and in Surrey the answer is slightly below the national average.

Byfleet is middling on safety in the reassuring sense. Most people who live there will find crime comes up mostly as a subject other people raise.
